Senior Geoenvironmental Engineer – Tailings Management

Overview

A leading engineering and environmental consulting firm is seeking a Senior Geoenvironmental Engineer with strong expertise in tailings management to join its Calgary-based team.

This role offers the opportunity to work on large-scale, complex projects supporting clients in the oil sands and mining sectors, with a focus on tailings management field programs, engineering analysis, and design.

Key Responsibilities

Project Leadership & Management

• Lead multidisciplinary project teams and manage scope, schedule, and budgets
• Ensure quality, safety, and performance standards are achieved
• Mentor and support the development of junior staff

Technical Expertise

• Provide technical leadership on complex geoenvironmental projects
• Lead tailings management field investigations and studies
• Conduct engineering assessments related to tailings, mine waste, and water management
• Support all project stages: conceptual, feasibility, FEED, and detailed design
• Develop compliant, defensible engineering analyses aligned with regulatory standards

Client & Business Development

• Maintain strong client relationships and serve as a key technical advisor
• Support proposal development, cost estimates, and project planning
• Identify new business opportunities and contribute to growth initiatives
• Participate in industry events, professional organizations, and networking

Problem Solving & Delivery

• Analyze complex site conditions and large datasets
• Develop innovative, practical, and compliant engineering solutions
• Anticipate and mitigate technical, regulatory, and operational risks

Communication & Collaboration

• Prepare high-quality technical reports and deliverables
• Present complex technical information clearly to diverse audiences
• Collaborate across disciplines to meet client and project objectives

About the Role

• Work Arrangement: Hybrid (Calgary-based office + remote flexibility)
• Travel: Approximately up to 10%, depending on project needs
• Work Environment: Fieldwork may involve industrial sites, challenging terrain, and regulated environments

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mining, Geological, Geotechnical, Environmental, Civil Engineering, or related field
• 10+ years of relevant experience
• P.Eng. (Alberta) or eligibility within one year
• Strong proficiency with MS Office tools and general engineering software
• Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record
• Legally authorized to work in Canada without sponsorship

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree in geoenvironmental, mining, or related discipline
• Experience with tailings geotechnics, fine tailings, or flow behavior
• Knowledge of oil sands tailings and mine waste management
• Background in mining or mineral processing operations
• Demonstrated leadership, project management, and client-facing experience
• Consulting background and/or involvement in business development
