Communications Advisor

Summary

The Communications Advisor supports the Client’s external affairs by developing and implementing external and internal communications activities in support of Project business objectives and strategies.

Responsibilities
• Lead development and execution of internal and external communications strategies.
• Lead event coordination for project and community-based events; including open houses, career fairs, volunteering opportunities, etc.
• Provide editorial review of communications content for the project, including but not limited to press releases, presentations, project updates, talking points, videos, website and social media content and other supporting materials.
• Coordinate with project leadership (including Construction Management, Health, Safety, Security & Environment, and Human Resources) on communications needs, content, and deliverables.
• Liaise with the client’s External Relations team to support contract requirements related to communications and other initiatives.
• Assist the Director, Project Communications & External Affairs and joint venture team with communications in the event of a crisis.
• Maintain a positive image for the joint venture on site and in the community.
• Facilitate communications with the site project employees and community as required.
• Support the tracking and reporting of metrics to demonstrate effectiveness of communications programs.
• Excellent writing and presentation skills. Demonstrated experience developing and executing internal and external communications plan.
• Organize and prioritize a variety of tasks in an effective and timely manner, sets priorities and meets deadlines.
• Analyze situations, identify, and forecast pertinent problems and evaluate realistic options; and recommend and implement appropriate courses of action.
• Leverage internal and external resources to administer policies and procedures consistently for the project.
• Support the Project’s brand. Protect and build the Project’s reputation.
• Stay current on communications best practices and trends and integrate into communications programs.
• Maintain compliance with all applicable policies, procedures, and global standards.
• Adhere to and support the joint venture's Health, Safety & Environmental and Sustainability policies.
• May need to travel to attend to business-related matters.



Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism, or a related degree, combined with substantial previous work experience in the communications field and a minimum of eight years of work-related experience.
• Ability to communicate effectively with both internal and external stakeholders, such as project management, coworkers, clients, vendors, contractors, and others.
• Technical understanding necessary to complete the job.
• Ability to learn and apply knowledge of applicable local, provincial, and federal/national statutes and guidelines.
• Ability to attend to detail and work in a time-conscious and time-effective manner.
• Previous project and/or construction site experience is a plus.
• Event organization experience especially with large, diverse audiences.
• Issues management and crises communications experience.
• Exceptional writing, editing, proofreading and oral presentation skills
• Ability to think and plan strategically.
• Team player – ability to influence without authority and work well together in a project team.
• Flexibility for adapting in a fast-paced environment.
• Excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to communicate effectively at all levels inside and outside the organization in fluid situations.
• Working knowledge of technology-based communications (Internet/Intranet, social media and other vehicles and their use as part of a strategic communications plan).
• Proven efficiency in project and time management – self-starter with ability to manage own workload.
• Ability to produce consistent, high-quality work within tight deadlines.
• Demonstrate flexibility and ability to remain positive and calm under pressure.
• Sensitivity to diverse work force, languages, and cultures.
