Mechanical Reliability Engineer - (Power Plant Background Preferred)
The Mechanical Reliability Engineer is responsible for ensuring the performance, reliability, and operational integrity of critical mechanical systems within data center facilities. Leveraging a strong background in power plant operations, this role focuses on equipment assessments, lifecycle management, and vendor oversight to maintain continuous uptime and support mission-critical infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
Equipment Reliability & Assessment
Perform detailed condition assessments of mechanical equipment including chillers, cooling towers, pumps, HVAC systems, generators, and fuel systems.
Apply reliability-centered maintenance (RCM), root cause analysis (RCA), and predictive maintenance techniques to identify risks and improve system performance.
Evaluate existing systems for performance gaps, efficiency improvements, and lifecycle replacement planning.
Develop and maintain asset health reports, criticality rankings, and maintenance strategies.
Ensure all mechanical systems meet data center performance, redundancy, and resiliency requirements (Tier standards, as applicable).
Participate in incident response, troubleshooting, and post-event analysis.
Vendor Oversight & Management
Provide technical oversight of third-party vendors, contractors, and service providers.
Review and approve scopes of work, maintenance procedures, and service reports.
Monitor vendor performance against contractual obligations, SLAs, and quality standards.
Coordinate vendor activities to ensure safe, compliant, and efficient execution of work.
Maintenance & Reliability Programs
Develop and implement preventive and predictive maintenance programs aligned with best practices.
Utilize condition monitoring tools (vibration analysis, thermography, oil analysis, etc.) to drive reliability improvements.
Identify opportunities to standardize maintenance procedures and improve efficiency.
Compliance, Safety & Documentation
Ensure compliance with all applicable codes, standards, and safety regulations.
Maintain accurate documentation including equipment records, maintenance logs, and engineering reports.
Support audits, inspections, and regulatory reviews.
Continuous Improvement
Lead initiatives to improve system efficiency, reduce downtime, and optimize maintenance costs.
Analyze operational data and trends to inform reliability strategies.
Collaborate with engineering, construction, and operations teams on upgrades and capital projects.
Qualifications Required
Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related field (or equivalent experience).
15/20 years of experience in power plant operations, maintenance, or reliability engineering.
Strong knowledge of rotating equipment, thermal systems, and industrial mechanical systems.
Experience performing equipment condition assessments and root cause analysis.
Proven experience managing or overseeing vendors and contractors.
Preferred
Experience in power plants, mission-critical facilities, or similar high-availability environments.
Familiarity with reliability tools and methodologies (RCM, FMEA, predictive analytics).
Certifications such as CMRP (Certified Maintenance & Reliability Professional) or PE license.
Knowledge of Tier standards, NFPA, ASME, and other applicable codes.
