Electrical Technician Job Profile

An Electrical Technician is the critical link between complex engineering designs and functional power systems. Unlike general electricians who may focus on residential wiring, Electrical Technicians specialise in the diagnostic, testing, and maintenance of sophisticated electrical components in industrial and technical environments. They ensure that automated assembly lines, hospital power grids, and aerospace systems operate without interruption.

In this role, one balances a deep understanding of electrical theory with hands-on mechanical skill, often working side-by-side with engineers to troubleshoot equipment that keeps modern society running.

Key Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

  • System Diagnostics and Troubleshooting: Using advanced tools to identify faults in complex circuits and finding the "why" behind failures to prevent recurrence.
  • Industrial Control Systems: Installing and maintaining Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs). This involves reading logic diagrams and ensuring sensors and actuators communicate correctly.
  • Preventative Maintenance: Performing scheduled inspections on transformers and motors. By testing insulation resistance, technicians identify hazards before shutdowns occur.
  • Blueprint Interpretation: Reading and updating technical drawings to reflect the "as-built" state, translating abstract designs into physical wiring and panels.
  • Calibration and Testing: Ensuring sensitive instruments and protective relays are calibrated to precise specifications, vital for safety in power plants and labs.
  • Safety Protocol Management: Implementing Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures to ensure machinery is de-energised. They are the onsite guardians of NEC compliance.
  • Equipment Installation: Assembling and mounting control panels, wire harnesses, and distribution switchgear to the highest industry standards.

  • High School Diploma or GED; Associate Degree in Electrical Technology preferred
  • Basic understanding of AC/DC circuits and Ohm’s Law
  • Familiarity with hand tools and basic power tools
  • Ability to pass an electrical aptitude test
  • Strong physical stamina and attention to safety detail

Professional Level

  • 4 – 6 years of experience in industrial or commercial electrical work
  • State Journeyman License or equivalent technical certification
  • Proficiency in PLC troubleshooting and motor control circuits
  • Deep knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC) and safety
  • Skilled in using specialised diagnostic software

Senior Level

  • 8+ years of experience, often with a Master Electrician license
  • Expertise in high-voltage systems or specialised automation (Robotics/Renewables)
  • Experience leading crews and managing large-scale maintenance shutdowns
  • Ability to mentor junior techs and interface directly with project engineers
  • Strong project management skills, including budgeting and procurement

The Future Outlook for the Role

The demand for Electrical Technicians is expected to grow 9% through 2034. This growth is fueled by the shift toward renewable energy and the expansion of EV infrastructure. As factories move toward Industry 4.0, technicians who bridge traditional electrical work with digital automation will be highly sought-after.

FAQs about Electrical Technicians

At TRS Staffing, we match your certifications with technical roles in energy, infrastructure, and manufacturing. We provide access to project-based or permanent positions often not advertised publicly and manage the logistics of the hiring process.

Advance by obtaining a Master Electrician license or specialising in robotics or renewables. Staying current with NEC updates and pursuing project management training can also help you transition into site management roles.
