Manager - Raw Material Handling

Role Overview

The Manager - Raw Material Handling will lead the design, engineering coordination, and execution of Raw Material Handling (RMH) systems for Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) and integrated steel plant operations. This position will oversee the successful delivery of bulk material handling projects from concept development through commissioning while ensuring operational efficiency, reliability, safety, and regulatory compliance.

Key Responsibilities

Project Management & Execution

  • Lead the design, engineering coordination, and execution of RMH systems for DRI and integrated steel plant operations.
  • Manage the full project lifecycle, including concept development, basic engineering, detailed engineering, procurement support, construction, commissioning, and startup.
  • Monitor project schedules, budgets, deliverables, and risks, implementing mitigation plans where necessary.
  • Coordinate with EPC contractors, engineering consultants, OEMs, and cross-functional teams to ensure seamless project execution.
  • Supervise site activities during construction and commissioning to ensure compliance with technical specifications, quality standards, and timelines.

Technical Leadership

  • Develop and review plant layouts, process flow diagrams, and capacity calculations.
  • Oversee the specification, selection, and sizing of key equipment including:
    • Belt Conveyors
    • Pipe Conveyors
    • Shuttle Conveyors
    • Stackers
    • Reclaimers
    • Crushers
    • Screens
    • Feeders
    • Wagon Tipplers
  • Optimize material flow and plant layouts to improve operational efficiency, reduce handling losses, and support future expansion.
  • Drive technical decision-making related to design optimization, equipment selection, and issue resolution.

Vendor & Stakeholder Management

  • Lead vendor evaluations, technical bid reviews, and supplier selection processes.
  • Manage supplier relationships, inspections, expediting activities, and equipment delivery schedules.
  • Collaborate closely with mechanical, civil, electrical, and instrumentation disciplines throughout project execution.

Safety, Compliance & Continuous Improvement

  • Ensure compliance with safety standards, environmental regulations, and industry best practices.
  • Implement bulk material handling best practices including:
    • Dust suppression
    • Spillage control
    • Automation systems
  • Drive initiatives to improve system reliability, operational efficiency, and cost effectiveness.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop engineering and supervisory teams while fostering a strong safety culture.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline (Required)
  • Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related field (Preferred)

Experience

  • 15+ years of experience in bulk material handling systems within the iron & steel, DRI, metals, or mining industries.
  • Proven success delivering greenfield and major brownfield industrial projects.
  • Demonstrated experience managing the entire project lifecycle from concept through commissioning and ramp-up.
  • Strong experience working with EPC contractors, engineering consultants, and multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Extensive site execution experience involving erection, installation, and commissioning activities.
  • Experience in project planning, scheduling, cost control, and risk management.
  • Proven ability to lead technical decision-making and project problem resolution.
  • Experience with vendor qualification, technical bid evaluation, inspections, and supplier management.
  • Hands-on experience with high-capacity bulk material handling systems involving:
    • Iron Ore
    • Coal
    • Fluxes
    • Conveyors
    • Stacker-Reclaimers
    • Crushers
    • Wagon Unloading Systems
  • Willingness to work in site-based roles with extended stays during project execution phases.

Preferred Certifications

  • Project Management Professional (PMP)
  • Certification in Bulk Material Handling or Material Handling Systems
  • NEBOSH, IOSH, or equivalent safety certification
  • Six Sigma Certification
  • Lean Manufacturing Certification
