We are seeking a Lead Mechanical Engineer responsible for leading mechanical design activities across mining and minerals projects. To guide engineering teams, support clients, and ensure high-quality, cost-effective design solutions across various project stages. This role is located in Johannesburg.
Job Responsibilities:
- Lead mechanical engineering and design for mining and processing plant projects.
- Manage and support a team of engineers and designers.
- Oversee the preparation and review of engineering deliverables (drawings, specifications, reports).
- Work closely with multidisciplinary teams including process, civil, electrical, and project management.
- Interface directly with clients to understand requirements and deliver technical solutions.
- Ensure designs meet safety standards, codes, and client specifications.
- Support project planning, manhour estimates, and scheduling.
- Review vendor documents and technical submissions.
Qualifications And Skills Requirements:
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
- Minimum 12 years’ experience in mechanical design within mining, minerals processing, or heavy industry.
- Proven experience in an EPCM, consulting, or design office environment.
- Professional registration (or working towards it).
- Strong experience with materials handling and process plant equipment (e.g. conveyors, crushers, mills, pumps).
- Strong leadership and communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Experience across study phases (concept, pre-feasibility, feasibility).
- Knowledge of project estimating and design planning.
