Role Overview

The Principal Engineer is a technical leader responsible for shaping the engineering vision, driving architectural excellence, and ensuring the reliability, scalability, and performance of complex systems. This role combines deep technical expertise with strategic influence, guiding teams to deliver high‑quality solutions while setting engineering standards across the organisation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and evolution of large‑scale, distributed, and highly available systems.

  • Define and drive long‑term architectural strategy, ensuring alignment with business goals.

  • Provide technical leadership across multiple teams, mentoring engineers and promoting best practices.

  • Evaluate and introduce new technologies, tools, and patterns to improve system performance and developer productivity.

  • Collaborate with product, security, and operations teams to deliver robust, secure, and compliant solutions.

  • Conduct deep technical reviews, ensuring code quality, architectural integrity, and operational excellence.

  • Troubleshoot complex production issues, guiding teams through root‑cause analysis and long‑term remediation.

  • Champion automation, observability, and continuous improvement across the engineering organisation.

  • Influence engineering culture by promoting innovation, knowledge sharing, and technical excellence.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Extensive experience designing and delivering large‑scale, mission‑critical systems.

  • Strong expertise in cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, or GCP) and modern infrastructure practices.

  • Deep understanding of distributed systems, networking, security, and performance optimisation.

  • Proven ability to lead technical direction across multiple teams or domains.

  • Strong programming skills in one or more modern languages (e.g., Python, Go, Java, C#, TypeScript).

  • Experience with CI/CD, infrastructure‑as‑code, container orchestration, and observability tooling.

  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to influence senior stakeholders and guide engineering decisions.

  • Track record of mentoring engineers and elevating team capability.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in platform engineering, cloud enablement, or developer experience tooling.

  • Background in designing internal platforms, shared services, or reusable frameworks.

  • Knowledge of compliance, governance, and security best practices for enterprise environments.

  • Contributions to open‑source projects or engineering communities.
