Role Overview

The Project Manager leads the planning, coordination, and delivery of transmission‑related projects, ensuring that upgrades, expansions, maintenance programmes, and new infrastructure installations are executed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with industry standards. The role requires strong organisational capability, technical fluency in transmission systems, and the ability to manage diverse stakeholders across engineering, field operations, regulatory bodies, and contractors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee end‑to‑end delivery of transmission projects, including substations, overhead lines, underground cables, protection upgrades, and system reinforcement works.

  • Develop project scopes, schedules, budgets, and resource plans aligned with operational and regulatory requirements.

  • Coordinate with engineering, planning, field operations, procurement, and external contractors to ensure seamless execution.

  • Monitor project progress, identifying risks, delays, and dependencies, and implement mitigation strategies.

  • Ensure all work complies with safety standards, environmental regulations, and industry codes (e.g., ENA, National Grid standards).

  • Manage stakeholder communication, providing clear updates on progress, risks, and changes.

  • Support outage planning and ensure project activities align with system availability and operational constraints.

  • Lead project documentation, including technical reports, change requests, risk registers, and close‑out packages.

  • Drive continuous improvement in project delivery processes, cost control, and quality assurance.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Experience managing infrastructure or engineering projects within utilities, energy, or industrial environments.

  • Strong understanding of transmission systems, substations, protection schemes, or high‑voltage equipment.

  • Ability to interpret technical drawings, engineering specifications, and regulatory requirements.

  • Proficiency with project management methodologies such as Agile, Waterfall, or hybrid approaches.

  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple concurrent workstreams.

  • Excellent communication and stakeholder‑management skills, including coordination with technical and non‑technical teams.

  • Experience using project management tools such as MS Project, Primavera, or similar platforms.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Background working with high‑voltage transmission assets (33kV–400kV).

  • Familiarity with UK energy regulations, grid codes, and safety frameworks.

  • Experience managing contractors and field teams in operational environments.

  • Project management certifications (e.g., PRINCE2, APM, PMP) are beneficial but not essential.
