What is a safety advisor

Safety Advisors (often referred to as HSE or EHS Advisors) are the guardians of onsite health, safety, and environmental compliance. Their primary mission is to ensure that every person returns home safely at the end of the day. They act as both educators and auditors, translating complex safety legislation into practical, life-saving actions on the ground.

In high-risk environments like construction, manufacturing, and offshore energy, the Safety Advisor is a constant presence, identifying hazards before they become incidents and fostering a "safety-first" culture among the workforce.

• Risk Assessment: Conduct and review detailed Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS) to ensure all tasks are planned safely.
• Site Inspections: Perform regular site walks and audits to monitor compliance with safety protocols and identify any unsafe acts or conditions.
• Incident Investigation: Lead the investigation into "near misses" and accidents, identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions.
• Training & Briefing: Deliver site inductions, toolbox talks, and specialised safety training to workers and subcontractors.
• Legislative Compliance: Ensure the project adheres to local and international standards, such as CDM 2015 regulations or OSHA standards.
• Emergency Planning: Develop and test emergency response procedures, including fire safety, first aid, and evacuation plans.

Safety is becoming increasingly data-driven and tech-enabled. Future Safety Advisors will utilise wearable technology to monitor worker vitals and drones for high-altitude or confined space inspections. The role is also expanding to include Health and Wellbeing, focusing on mental health and ergonomic safety alongside physical hazard prevention.
