Role Overview

The 66kV Senior Authorised Person (SAP) is responsible for the safe operation, isolation, and restoration of high‑voltage electrical networks up to 66kV. The role ensures compliance with company safety rules, statutory regulations, and industry standards while supervising work activities, issuing safety documentation, and maintaining system integrity.

Key Responsibilities

  • HV Switching Operations — Plan, prepare and execute switching schedules on 33–66kV networks, ensuring safe isolation and energisation.

  • Safety Documentation — Issue, receive and cancel Permits to Work, Sanctions for Test, Limitations of Access and associated documents.

  • Control of HV Isolations — Ensure correct application of isolations, earthing, and safety precautions in line with network safety rules.

  • Site Supervision — Oversee contractors and working parties, ensuring compliance with SSOW and safe working practices.

  • Outage Planning — Coordinate planned outages, liaise with control rooms, customers, and project teams.

  • Network Operations — Support fault response, switching for faults, and restoration of supplies.

  • Commissioning Support — Assist with testing, commissioning, energisation of switchgear, transformers, cables and protection systems.

  • Technical Assurance — Provide technical guidance on HV systems, protection interfaces, and operational constraints.

  • Compliance — Ensure adherence to EAWR, CDM, DNO/ICP safety rules, and company procedures.

  • Documentation & Reporting — Maintain accurate switching logs, defect reports, and operational records.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Authorised up to 66kV under DNO, ICP, private network or OEM safety rules

  • Strong understanding of HV network architecture, protection schemes, and operational constraints

  • Experience issuing and managing HV safety documentation

  • Competent in HV switching, isolations, and restoration

  • Ability to supervise contractors and working parties

  • Strong decision‑making and risk‑assessment capability

  • Experience with commissioning, testing or maintenance of HV assets (switchgear, transformers, cables, protection)

Desirable Experience

  • Experience on wind farms, data centres, utilities, industrial private networks or substations

  • Knowledge of partial discharge testing, SCADA, automation, or protection relay testing

  • Experience mentoring junior engineers or trainees

  • Understanding of contestable works and DNO/ICP processes

Qualifications

  • Electrical Engineering degree, HNC/HND or equivalent

  • Recognised HV SAP authorisation (DNO/ICP/Private Network/OEM)

  • IOSH/NEBOSH or equivalent safety qualification

  • GWO (for wind roles) – optional

  • Full UK driving licence
