Director of Maintenance
We currently seek a high-caliber Director of Maintenance on a direct hire basis within our client’s team of experienced professionals.
The Director of Maintenance is part of our client’s management and is responsible for developing and implementing the maintenance department’s goals, policies, and work standards; evaluates efficiency and output; plans and monitors the department budget; and reviews maintenance and contractor contracts.
The ideal candidate will have strong leadership qualities with an emphasis on asset management and safety and will utilize various tools such as Computerized Maintenance Management System and Budget/Cost/Expense applications to help evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of work projects. The Director of Maintenance will empower staff to make decisions within established guidelines and take corrective action as needed. This person must support and implement management initiatives in a positive manner. The Director of Maintenance is expected to establish and maintain effective relationships with staff, contractors, client, and others stakeholders in the course of the work, and they must communicate and present information clearly and effectively to a variety of audiences.
The ideal candidate has knowledge of maintenance needs of water and/or wastewater treatment facilities, with a preference for experience in seawater environments.

Specific tasks include:
- Develop, implement, and manage the maintenance, repair, and replacement plan using best management practices and life-cycle asset management principles, including methods aligned with the Institute of Asset Management.
- Develop the annual maintenance budget for review and approval and manage expenditures against the approved budget.
- Develop, implement, and sustain a comprehensive maintenance program for assets, including predictive, preventive, and corrective strategies.
- Develop, implement, and manage maintenance plans and Capital Improvement Programs and recommend best practices for asset management and maintenance systems.
- Develop, lead, and manage the maintenance program, including staffing, work planning, assignments, workflow monitoring, and continuous improvement of processes, service delivery, and internal reporting system.
- Manage and participate in the development and implementation of short- and long-term goals, objectives, and priorities for the maintenance and asset management programs.
- Oversees the Computerized Maintenance Management System, monitors work progress, generates report, and ensures completion of preventative, predictive, and corrective work orders
- Ensures appropriate installation, maintenance, and repair of plant equipment and systems.
- Prepares and maintains a variety of records and reports, inspection forms, accident reports, and maintenance requests.
- Maintains records in the form of blueprints, drawings, manufacturers manuals, and specifications for water treatment equipment and machinery.
- Supervises staff in accomplishing assigned tasks and ensures staff observe and comply with all company and mandated safety rules, regulations, and protocols.
- Responds to emergencies as needed and assembles crew as required.
Experience
- Eight (8) years of progressively responsible experience in maintenance and asset management programs related to the operation, repair, replacement, and maintenance of domestic water supply, recycled water systems, reverse osmosis treatment facilities, or similar.
- Minimum of three (3) years of supervising the functions listed above.
- Knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations pertaining to the production, treatment, and delivery of potable water, including the Safe Drinking Water Act and relevant Environmental Protection Agency and State Water Resources Control Board Division of Drinking Water regulations.
- Knowledge of standard Cal/OSHA safe work practices and safety equipment related to the work; special safety requirements when working with chemicals, respiratory safety requirements related to the work, and HAZMAT requirements for chemicals used at the treatment plant.
- Budgeting, recordkeeping and purchasing practices and procedures, including the drafting of specifications for equipment and materials.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in engineering, water technology, or a related field.
- Certificate of registration as a professional engineer (mechanical, civil, structural, industrial, or chemical) issued by the State of California. Registration must be maintained while in this job classification.
- Six (6) years of relevant training and experience in developing, maintaining, implementing, and improving of asset management and maintenance programs related to the operation, repair, replacement, and maintenance of domestic water supply, recycled water, reverse osmosis water treatment, or similar facilities may be substituted for the education requirement combined with at least three (3) years of supervisory experience supervising these functions.
License or Certificates
- Valid California class C driver's license with good driving record
- Valid certification from one of the following organizations (Preferred):
- Institute of Asset Management (IAM)
- IAM Certificate and/or IAM Diploma
- Asset Management Council certificate from one of the following (Preferred):
- Certified Associate in Asset Management (CAAM)
- Certified Practitioner if Asset Management (CPAM)
- State Water Resources Control Board Water Treatment 2 or 3 Certificate (Preferred)
- If candidate does not have, within 12 months of employment, the successful candidate must obtain a Treatment 2 Certificate issued by the State Water Resources Control Board, and within 24 months of employment, the successful candidate must obtain a Treatment 3 Certificate issued by the State Water Resources Control Board.
