Electrical Engineer – Power Systems

Overview

We have an exciting contract opportunity to join our global EPC client as an Electrical Engineer – Power Systems.

Responsibilities

• Support the business development team in selecting suitable grid interconnect approaches, switchgear, transformers, and MCCs for power plant solutions.
• Prepare LV, MV, and HV single-line diagrams for power generation systems, including protective relays, metering, and grounding requirements.
• Perform detailed design of paralleling generator schemes, including protection settings.
• Develop electrical schematics and wiring diagrams for power distribution systems and auxiliary equipment (e.g., lighting, exhaust fans).
• Create load lists and perform electrical equipment sizing calculations.
• Conduct arc flash hazard analysis and coordinate protective devices.
• Specify electrical equipment based on engineering judgment and applicable codes and standards.
• Review vendor drawings and develop interconnection drawings to ensure scope and design accuracy.
• Prepare electrical bills of materials (BOM) and release for procurement.
• Review utility interconnection agreements directly or on behalf of clients.
• Prepare electrical construction drawings and specifications in coordination with multidisciplinary teams.
• Develop construction scope of work documents for contractor bidding and proposals.
• Liaise with suppliers and contractors to clarify technical specifications and scope.
• Inspect contractor work to ensure compliance with issued-for-construction drawings.
• Support programming and commissioning of electrical systems.
• Coordinate with internal teams and site personnel to respond to RFIs during project execution.
• Communicate technical information to internal teams, clients, and stakeholders locally and internationally.

Qualifications

• Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in Canada with a minimum of 5 years of experience in power systems design.
• Strong working knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code, including conductor sizing, protection selection, and installation practices.
• Understanding of electrical power generation systems, including synchronizing controls for spark-ignited reciprocating engines.
• Experience with LV, MV, and HV power distribution systems.
• Ability to design single-line diagrams, motor control schematics, industrial electrical systems, and protection/control systems.
• Experience specifying electrical equipment such as transformers, switchgear, MCCs, VFDs, and related systems.
• Knowledge of power distribution systems including generators, UPS systems, substations, switchgear, and motor control centers.
• Proficiency with AutoCAD Electrical.
• Experience using electrical engineering software such as ETAP for relay coordination, load flow, short circuit, harmonic, and motor starting analysis.
