Manager – Piping
Position Summary
The Manager – Piping will lead the engineering and design review of piping systems for a Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) and Integrated Steel Plant, preferably utilizing the Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) route.
The role oversees all piping-related activities across process units, utilities, and supporting infrastructure to ensure safe, reliable, and cost-effective project execution. The successful candidate will provide technical leadership throughout the project lifecycle, including engineering reviews, contractor management, construction support, testing, and commissioning.
Experience in large-scale industrial facilities within Iron & Steel, Metals & Mining, and heavy manufacturing environments is required. Experience supporting construction, installation, and maintenance activities is considered a strong advantage.
Job Responsibilities
Engineering & Design Management
- Review and approve piping engineering deliverables, including:
- Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs)
- Piping Layouts
- Isometric Drawings
- Material Specifications
- Construction Packages
- Ensure piping designs comply with:
- ASME Standards
- API Standards
- OSHA Requirements
- Project Specifications
- Coordinate with process, mechanical, structural, electrical, and instrumentation teams.
- Evaluate and resolve technical issues related to:
- Constructability
- Operability
- Maintainability
- Design Compliance
- Review pipe stress analysis reports and ensure design compliance.
- Provide site design coordination and technical support during:
- Construction
- Installation
- Testing
- Commissioning
Quality Assurance & Quality Control
- Ensure compliance with project QA/QC procedures and industry standards.
- Review:
- Welding Procedures
- Inspection Plans
- Hydrostatic Test Procedures
- Non-Destructive Examination (NDE) Requirements
- Coordinate inspections, testing, punch-list closure, and final acceptance activities.
- Verify turnover documentation and commissioning packages are complete.
Health, Safety & Environmental Compliance
- Promote and enforce a strong safety culture throughout all piping activities.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations and environmental requirements.
- Participate in:
- Safety Audits
- Hazard Assessments
- Toolbox Talks
- Incident Investigations
Project Controls & Resource Management
- Manage piping budgets, schedules, and resource planning activities.
- Monitor project progress and implement recovery plans when necessary.
- Review contractor progress reports, change orders, and claims.
- Support procurement activities, including:
- Material Take-Offs (MTOs)
- Vendor Evaluations
- Equipment Inspections
Leadership & Stakeholder Coordination
- Lead and mentor piping engineers, supervisors, inspectors, and field personnel.
- Foster collaboration between engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and operations teams.
- Communicate project status, risks, and opportunities to management and project stakeholders.
- Support workforce development and continuous improvement programs.
Skills & Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in:
- Mechanical Engineering
- Civil Engineering
- Construction Management
- Related Discipline
Experience
- 8 to 12 years of progressive experience in piping engineering within:
- Iron & Steel
- Metals & Mining
- Heavy Industrial Manufacturing
- Experience supporting large-scale industrial projects and multidisciplinary project teams.
Technical Skills
- Strong knowledge of:
- ASME B31 Piping Codes and Standards
- Pressure Piping Systems
- Piping Materials Selection
- Corrosion Control
- Insulation Systems
- Piping Supports
- Experience with pipe stress analysis and related engineering practices.
- Proficiency with piping design software and engineering tools.
- Familiarity with:
- Construction Management Systems
- Project Controls Software
- Digital Project Execution Platforms
Leadership Competencies
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strategic thinking and technical decision-making ability.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Ability to work effectively within complex industrial project environments.
