Position: Staff Accountant
Location: Myrtle Beach, SC
Employment Type: Full-time/Direct Hire
Industry: Underground Utility Construction
Salary: $55,000-$85,000 DOE

Position Summary
We are a rapidly growing underground utility construction company expanding through both organic growth and strategic acquisitions. We are seeking a detail-oriented Staff Accountant to support the Controller in maintaining accurate financial records and strengthening accounting processes that support scalable, multi-entity growth.

This role is hands-on and supports day-to-day accounting operations including general ledger maintenance, accounts payable and receivable, payroll support, job cost accounting, and financial reporting. The Staff Accountant will assist with month-end close, Work-in-Progress (WIP) reporting, compliance requirements, and the continued standardization of accounting processes across the organization.

Key Responsibilities
General Accounting & Financial Reporting
  • Support daily accounting operations including general ledger entries, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll support, and fixed asset tracking.
  • Prepare and post journal entries while maintaining appropriate supporting documentation.
  • Assist with monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting in accordance with GAAP and construction industry standards.
  • Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards, and balance sheet and other GL accounts.
  • Assist in preparing internal financial reports as requested.
Job Cost Accounting & WIP Support
  • Support detailed job cost accounting at the task and cost-code level.
  • Assist in preparing Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules and percentage-of-completion revenue calculations.
  • Monitor accounts payable postings to ensure proper classification and accuracy within the general ledger.
  • Assist with tracking over/under billings and retainage balances.
  • Support AIA billing processes and related documentation.
Payroll & Compliance Support
  • Ensure accurate labor cost allocation to jobs.
  • Support certified payroll reporting and prevailing wage (Davis-Bacon) compliance as required.
  • Maintain organized documentation for audits, lender requests, and regulatory compliance.
Audit & Tax Coordination
  • Assist with the preparation of schedules and documentation for external audits and financial reviews.
  • Support tax filing processes by gathering requested information for external tax preparers.
  • Ensure year-round organization of audit-ready documentation.
Process Improvement & Systems Support
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting workflows and strengthen internal controls.
  • Support system implementations, integrations, and onboarding of acquired entities as directed by the Controller.
  • Maintain compliance with company accounting policies and internal control standards.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required.
  • Minimum of 2 years of accounting experience (construction industry experience preferred).
  • Basic understanding of GAAP and financial reporting principles.
  • Familiarity with job cost accounting and construction accounting concepts is a plus.
  • Experience with accounting or ERP systems.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel with a desire to continue developing advanced skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with high attention to detail.
