Senior Stress Engineer

We currently seek a high caliber Senior Stress Engineer for a long-term basis within our client’s team of experienced professionals. Based in Fountain Valley, CA.

The position has a flexible 9/80 work schedule with a hybrid work location, supporting the Fountain Valley office.

In this position, you will apply your knowledge of the principles of stress analysis to:

• Perform stress analysis as needed to ensure piping design meets the intent of applicable codes and standards as well as specific manufacturer’s standards.
• Develop standards and guidelines as needed to govern development of stress analysis on a general as well as project-specific basis.
• Coordinate with design staff to guide them in project related stress analysis and pipe support engineering activities.

Job Requirements

Your core duties and responsibilities may require you to do the following:

• Perform stress analysis and/or review and update existing analyses of piping systems connected to critical equipment such as pumps, heat exchangers, filters, compressors, tanks, turbines and air coolers using CAESAR II software to qualify piping in accordance with ASME and API codes, project standards and project specifications.
• Develop applicable load cases based on design codes and client requirements.
• Evaluate calculated SIFs, stress results, displacements, pipe support loads and pipe guide/anchor loads.
• Determine SIFs on trunnions, dummy legs, and cross tees using hand calculations or FEA.
• Perform tank and vessel allowable stress loads using API or WRC codes and/or NozzlePRO.
• Review and approve project drawings; maintain communication with the project team, the client, and construction personnel.
• Analyze and make independent recommendations regarding solutions to pipe stress issues with varying complexity in accordance with project objectives and guidelines.
• Work with other engineers and designers in the resolution of the technical issues.
• Perform dynamic modal analysis for calculating piping natural frequencies to prevent operational vibration issues and potential piping fatigue.
• Create detailed drawings for any piping appurtenances such as expansion joints, spring hangers, snubbers etc.
• Develop detailed engineering reports.

Qualifications:

Skill Requirements

• Strong verbal, written and communication skills with the ability to clearly communicate technical subject matter to a wide range of audiences
• Desire and ability to learn new skills and assume greater responsibilities
• Extensive knowledge in pipe stress codes and standards is required, including:
o ASME - B31.1, B31.3, B31.4, ASME B31.8, ASME BPVC Section VIII
o ASCE 7-16
o API – 6A, 520, 521, 537, 610, 618, 650, 660 & 676
• Expertise with CAESAR II, NavisWorks and Finite Element Analysis using NozzlePRO is required.
• Ability to visit local refinery, midstream and gas utility project sites for data gathering and inspections with occasional travel to farther locations

Experience and Education Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree (or higher) in Mechanical Engineering is required.
• 5+ years’ experience utilizing CAESAR II software to perform pipe stress analysis in accordance with ASME codes and standards for the refinery, midstream and/or gas utility industry is required.
• California Mechanical Professional Engineer license is strongly preferred.
• Valid Energy infrastructure experience is preferred.
• Engineering consulting experience is preferred.
• Valid driver’s license and clean driving record is required.
