POSITION SUMMARY

Join a team committed to safety excellence. As a Safety Specialist, you will play a vital role in fostering a proactive and compliant safety culture across underground utility projects. Reporting to the Safety Manager, you’ll be a hands-on field resource, conducting site inspections, supporting training initiatives, assisting with incident investigations, and ensuring adherence to OSHA, DOT, and company safety standards.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES


Field Safety Operations
  • Perform routine safety inspections and site walks to identify hazards and recommend corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with crews and supervisors to complete Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) and daily safety checklists.
  • Facilitate pre-task planning and toolbox talks to reinforce site-specific safety protocols.
  • Support Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures, ensuring proper tagging, communication, and escalation when necessary.
  • Assist in the implementation and enforcement of company-wide safety policies.
Training & Workforce Engagement
  • Lead new hire safety orientations and assist with ongoing training including CPR, First Aid, and refresher courses.
  • Promote safe work practices such as PPE usage, trenching and excavation safety, confined space entry, and equipment operation.
  • Maintain accurate training records and documentation in coordination with the Safety Department.
Incident Management & Reporting
  • Support the documentation of incidents and near-misses, including gathering statements, photos, and evidence for investigations.
  • Monitor open safety issues and assist with timely resolution and follow-up.
Compliance & Documentation
  • Maintain safety records to ensure compliance with OSHA, DOT, and internal standards.
  • Assist in preparing monthly and quarterly safety performance reports.
  • Ensure proper display of safety signage, permits, and postings at all job sites.
Safety Culture Advocacy
  • Engage field teams to promote a positive safety mindset and encourage safe behaviors.
  • Foster open communication around safety concerns and ensure prompt resolution.
  • Serve as a visible ambassador of safety excellence on-site.

QUALIFICATIONS


Education
  • Associate’s degree in Occupational Safety, Construction Management, or related field preferred.
  • Equivalent experience may be considered in lieu of formal education.
Experience
  • 1–3 years of safety experience in construction, preferably in underground utilities or heavy civil environments.
  • Familiarity with OSHA 29 CFR 1926 standards.
Skills
  • Strong observational and communication skills with a detail-oriented mindset.
  • Ability to work effectively in field conditions and adapt to changing environments.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and basic reporting tools.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
Certifications
  • First Aid and CPR (preferred).
  • OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety Certification (preferred).

Physical & Work Environment Requirements

  • Ability to walk, climb, and stand for extended periods on active construction sites.
  • Capable of lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Primarily field-based with regional travel; occasional office work for reporting and meetings.
