A Mining Development project is West Africa is recruiting for a Lead Consultant – Environmental Social Impact Assessment to work on a 6 month initial contract and be based in London.
The consultant will join the company’s owners’ team, reporting to the companies Environmental and Social Director, with responsibility for the following related to the project’s Environmental, Social , Impact Assessment.
1. Support the completion of the socio-economic and health baseline datasets and reports, including broader social topics such as ecosystems services, cultural heritage and land tenure, by the relevant specialised consultants and the lead ESIA consultant;
2. Oversee the lead ESIA consultant to develop a resettlement policy framework, and eventually list of losses, resettlement action plan and a livelihood-restoration plan;
3. Oversee the lead ESIA consultant to conduct the social component of the impact assessment;
4. Oversee the development of the social management plans by the lead ESIA consultant for mitigation measures emerging from the social impact assessment;
5. Liaise with the other members of the ESIA team, representing its social component and integrating all components coherently together;
6. Liaise with and represent social concerns, broadly defined, to the design and engineering teams;
7. Liaise with the consultants developing regional development programmes to enhance the economic conditions of the project’s social area of influence, in collaboration with the External Relations Manager; and
8. Support the External Relations and Communications unit as reasonably required.
This role is envisaged to last approximately six months, from March through September 2020, to assist the owners’ team to deliver a high-quality, integrated ESIA package for submission to the Government in September 2020. There is a possibility for this to be extended.
Qualifications and Assignment
The social specialist should have at least 15 years of experience in social impact assessment, management and/or resettlement for large industrial or infrastructural projects, with at least five years in Africa.
Ability to read and write English and French is essential, especially to write high-quality English. Demonstrated ability to work on a team is essential, too.
The assignment is based in London, with travel to West Africa as necessary.
