Intermediate / Senior Geotechnical Engineer
Location: Calgary, Alberta (Hybrid)

About the Opportunity
Our client, a leading multidisciplinary engineering consulting firm, is seeking an Intermediate/Senior Geotechnical Engineer to join its Earth & Environment team in Calgary, Alberta.
This role offers the opportunity to work on a diverse portfolio of infrastructure, transportation, municipal, building, hydraulic, and environmental projects throughout Alberta and Western Canada. The successful candidate will contribute to the planning, design, and delivery of geotechnical engineering solutions while collaborating with multidisciplinary project teams.
Depending on experience, the successful candidate will lead or support field investigations, technical analyses, geotechnical design, construction services, client coordination, project management, and mentorship of junior professionals.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and support geotechnical engineering studies from project planning through final reporting.
- Plan, coordinate, and supervise geotechnical field investigations, including:
- Borehole drilling
- Test pitting
- In-situ sampling and testing
- Laboratory testing
- Subcontractor coordination
- Analyze geotechnical, geological, and laboratory data to assess:
- Soil and rock properties
- Groundwater conditions
- Strength and deformation characteristics
- Construction-related risks
- Prepare geotechnical reports, technical memoranda, and engineering recommendations.
- Perform and review analyses related to:
- Foundation design
- Slope stability
- Retaining structures
- Excavation and backfill requirements
- Pavement considerations
- Groundwater conditions
- Contribute to geotechnical designs, technical drawings, specifications, and tender documents.
- Provide technical support during project design and construction phases.
- Conduct construction reviews, site inspections, and field engineering services.
- Establish and maintain quality control procedures for geotechnical analyses, reports, and project deliverables.
- Ensure compliance with applicable regulations, industry standards, and best practices.
- Prepare proposals, work plans, fee estimates, and bid submissions.
- Develop and maintain strong working relationships with clients, contractors, stakeholders, and project teams.
- Mentor and support junior engineers, technologists, and field personnel.
- Manage multiple projects while maintaining scope, schedule, budget, quality, and safety objectives.
- Promote a strong health and safety culture and ensure adherence to all safety requirements.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering (Geotechnical Focus), or a related engineering discipline.
- Minimum 5 years of geotechnical engineering experience, preferably within a consulting environment.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in Alberta or eligibility for registration with APEGA.
- Experience planning and supervising geotechnical investigations and preparing technical reports.
- Strong understanding of:
- Soil mechanics
- Foundation design
- Earthworks
- Retaining structures
- Slope stability
- Groundwater conditions
- Construction methodologies
- Experience using geotechnical analysis and design software.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and CAD systems.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational, leadership, and project management skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
- Valid Class 5 Driver's License and willingness to travel to project sites throughout Alberta and other regions as required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's Degree in Geotechnical Engineering or related field.
- Experience with transportation, municipal, or infrastructure projects.
- Familiarity with provincial and municipal engineering standards.
- Experience in pavement evaluation and design.
- Experience with:
- Dams and hydraulic structures
- Slope stabilization
- Erosion protection
- Geohazard assessments
- Knowledge of:
- Seismic analysis
- Soil dynamics
- Liquefaction assessment
- Advanced numerical modelling
- Proposal development, budgeting, and client relationship management experience.
- Prior experience mentoring junior technical staff.
