POSITION SUMMARY
Join a team committed to safety excellence. As a Safety Specialist, you will play a vital role in fostering a proactive and compliant safety culture across underground utility projects. Reporting to the Safety Manager, you’ll be a hands-on field resource, conducting site inspections, supporting training initiatives, assisting with incident investigations, and ensuring adherence to OSHA, DOT, and company safety standards.KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Field Safety Operations
- Perform routine safety inspections and site walks to identify hazards and recommend corrective actions.
- Collaborate with crews and supervisors to complete Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) and daily safety checklists.
- Facilitate pre-task planning and toolbox talks to reinforce site-specific safety protocols.
- Support Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures, ensuring proper tagging, communication, and escalation when necessary.
- Assist in the implementation and enforcement of company-wide safety policies.
- Lead new hire safety orientations and assist with ongoing training including CPR, First Aid, and refresher courses.
- Promote safe work practices such as PPE usage, trenching and excavation safety, confined space entry, and equipment operation.
- Maintain accurate training records and documentation in coordination with the Safety Department.
- Support the documentation of incidents and near-misses, including gathering statements, photos, and evidence for investigations.
- Monitor open safety issues and assist with timely resolution and follow-up.
- Maintain safety records to ensure compliance with OSHA, DOT, and internal standards.
- Assist in preparing monthly and quarterly safety performance reports.
- Ensure proper display of safety signage, permits, and postings at all job sites.
- Engage field teams to promote a positive safety mindset and encourage safe behaviors.
- Foster open communication around safety concerns and ensure prompt resolution.
- Serve as a visible ambassador of safety excellence on-site.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education
- Associate’s degree in Occupational Safety, Construction Management, or related field preferred.
- Equivalent experience may be considered in lieu of formal education.
- 1–3 years of safety experience in construction, preferably in underground utilities or heavy civil environments.
- Familiarity with OSHA 29 CFR 1926 standards.
- Strong observational and communication skills with a detail-oriented mindset.
- Ability to work effectively in field conditions and adapt to changing environments.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and basic reporting tools.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
- Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
- First Aid and CPR (preferred).
- OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety Certification (preferred).
Physical & Work Environment Requirements
- Ability to walk, climb, and stand for extended periods on active construction sites.
- Capable of lifting up to 50 pounds.
- Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Primarily field-based with regional travel; occasional office work for reporting and meetings.
