Medium Voltage Commissioning Specialist
Full-Time | Permanent
Location: Calgary
Overview
We are seeking an experienced Medium Voltage Commissioning Specialist to support the commissioning, testing, and energization of electrical systems and equipment.
In this role, you will act as both a technical expert and mentor, helping develop the capabilities of fellow specialists while ensuring the highest standards of quality, safety, and technical execution.
You will also play a key role in building and maintaining service programs, developing technical documentation, and driving knowledge sharing across teams. This position requires close collaboration with customers, project teams, and manufacturing to ensure successful project delivery.
Key Responsibilities
Commissioning & Testing
- Perform acceptance, maintenance, and diagnostic testing on electrical equipment up to 15 kV, including:
- Switchgear, circuit breakers, and switching devices
- Motor control systems (VFDs, MCCs)
- Power and instrument transformers
- Cable terminations and testing
- Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS)
- Protection relays and control systems
- Commission and validate control circuits for protection, interlocking, monitoring, and indication systems
- Interpret and work from:
- Single-line diagrams
- Wiring and schematic drawings
- Logic diagrams and relay configuration files
Technical Documentation & Analysis
- Develop and maintain:
- Test procedures
- Commissioning plans
- Detailed technical reports aligned with NETA and industry standards
- Analyze test data, identify deficiencies, and recommend corrective actions
- Provide feedback and support continuous improvement initiatives
Lifecycle Services & Program Support
- Support and administer lifecycle service programs such as:
- Operator training
- Power quality analysis
- Infrared thermography
- Vibration and oil analysis
- Partial discharge testing
Leadership & Knowledge Sharing
- Mentor and support junior specialists and team members
- Drive knowledge transfer, standardization of best practices, and capability development
- Promote technical excellence and continuous learning
Safety & Field Execution
- Champion a strong safety culture, including:
- LOTO procedures
- Arc flash protection
- Electrical and environmental safety standards
- Work safely alongside construction and commissioning teams in dynamic environments
- Troubleshoot complex systems, perform root cause analysis, and resolve issues under pressure
Qualifications & Experience
Education & Certifications
- Diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology or Degree in Electrical Engineering
- ** Journeyman Electrician or Power System Electrician** certification is an asset
- NETA Certification (Level I–III) or equivalent is considered an asset
Experience
- Minimum 4+ years of commissioning or electrical testing experience
- Hands-on experience with medium voltage systems (up to 15 kV)
- Experience above 15 kV is an asset
- Practical experience with relay testing and associated tools:
- Relay test sets, Megohmmeter, Ductor, TTR, VLF, AC Hipot
- Software such as Omicron Test Universe, Doble, AcSELerator
- Protection systems (SEL, Multilin, Schneider)
- Exposure to protection, control systems, substation commissioning, or automation is an asset

Additional Requirements
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license with a clean driver’s abstract
- Willingness to travel and work in various site conditions, including adverse weather
- Ability to work rotations and at customer sites as required
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office tools
