Overview
The Commissioning Director is responsible for the strategic leadership, governance, and delivery of all commissioning activities across major capital projects. This role ensures that systems, equipment, and facilities are designed, installed, tested, and validated to meet operational, regulatory, and performance requirements. The Director oversees multi‑disciplinary teams, manages complex stakeholder environments, and drives commissioning excellence from pre‑design through handover.
Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Governance
- Commissioning Strategy Development — Define enterprise‑level commissioning frameworks, standards, and methodologies.
- Program Governance — Establish controls, KPIs, and reporting structures for all commissioning programs.
- Risk Management — Identify and mitigate technical, operational, and safety risks across project portfolios.
- Lead long‑range planning for commissioning capacity, resource allocation, and capability development.
Project & Technical Oversight
- Commissioning Planning — Oversee commissioning plans, schedules, and readiness reviews.
- Ensure compliance with engineering specifications, regulatory requirements, and industry standards.
- Direct troubleshooting, issue resolution, and root‑cause analysis during commissioning and start‑up.
- Approve commissioning documentation, test procedures, and sign‑off packages.
Team Leadership & Talent Development
- Commissioning Team Management — Lead multi‑disciplinary commissioning managers, engineers, and field technicians.
- Build organizational capability through training, mentorship, and performance management.
- Oversee contractor and vendor commissioning teams to ensure alignment with project objectives.
Stakeholder & Client Engagement
- Cross‑Functional Alignment — Coordinate with engineering, construction, operations, HSE, and quality teams.
- Serve as the executive point of contact for clients, regulators, and senior leadership.
- Present commissioning progress, risks, and readiness status to executive committees.
Operational Excellence & Continuous Improvement
- Process Optimization — Implement best practices, digital tools, and performance metrics to improve commissioning efficiency.
- Drive lessons‑learned programs and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Ensure documentation, turnover packages, and operational readiness deliverables meet quality standards.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, or related).
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation preferred.
- Advanced certifications in commissioning, project management, or asset management are an asset.
- 12–20+ years of commissioning experience in energy, utilities, industrial, infrastructure, or large‑scale capital projects.
- Proven leadership of commissioning programs exceeding $100M+ in project value.
- Demonstrated success managing multi‑disciplinary teams and complex stakeholder environments.
