We are seeking an experienced Lead Instrumentation & Control Engineer to oversee the development, integration, and delivery of advanced I&C systems for major mining and minerals processing projects. This role offers the opportunity to drive technical excellence, guide multidisciplinary engineering teams, and contribute to large‑scale industrial projects shaping the future of sustainable resource development. This role is based in Johannesburg.

Job Summary:
  • Lead I&C Engineer provides technical leadership, strategic direction, and oversight for all instrumentation and control engineering activities within mining projects. The role ensures full alignment with project objectives, industry best practices, regulatory requirements, and internal execution standards—supporting predictable, high‑quality project outcomes.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Leadership & Technical Direction.
  • Provide guidance and oversight for all instrumentation and control system engineering activities across mining projects.
  • Lead a team of I&C engineers and designers to deliver high‑quality engineering packages, including:
  • Instrumentation specifications.
  • Control system philosophies.
  • Functional specifications.
  • Control system architectures.
  • Ensure technical integrity, maintainability, operability, and safety compliance of all I&C deliverables.
  • Cross‑Discipline Coordination.
  • Coordinate interfaces between I&C engineering and key disciplines such as:
  • Process Engineering.
  • Civil & Structural.
  • Project Management.
  • Procurement & Contracts.
  • Construction teams.
  • Facilitate communication to resolve technical issues and ensure integrated project execution.
  • Cost‑Effective Delivery.
  • Apply cost‑competitive engineering practices to optimize I&C processes and deliver efficient project outcomes.
  • Lead value‑engineering initiatives to enhance system reliability, operability, and lifecycle performance.
  • Promote smart instrumentation and sustainable automation strategies.
  • Project Delivery, Compliance & Quality.
  • Monitor engineering progress against budgets and schedules.
  • Support change management processes, risk and variance reporting, and progress tracking.
  • Maintain communication with Engineering Management regarding challenges, resource allocations, and compliance.
  • Ensure all deliverables meet:
  • Client expectations.
  • Industry codes and standards.
  • Safety and regulatory requirements.
  • Hazardous area (Ex) compliance.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS REQUIREMENTS:
  • Accredited four‑year BSc degree (or global equivalent) in:
  • Instrumentation Engineering.
  • Electrical/Electronic Engineering (Controls focus).
  • Minimum 12 years of relevant experience in instrumentation and/or control systems engineering within mining, mineral processing, or heavy industrial environments.
  • Experience leading teams and managing I&C scope across full project life cycles.
  • Strong understanding of applicable codes, standards, and regulatory frameworks.
  • Deep knowledge of PLCs, DCS, SCADA, field instrumentation, and industrial communication networks.
  • Experience in:
  • SIL/LOPA methodologies.
  • Control system architecture development.
  • Hazardous area classifications.
  • Familiarity with engineering resource planning, forecasting, and effort‑hour estimating.
  • Commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
  • Ability to work in multidisciplinary project teams across office and site environments.
  • Willingness to travel to site locations as required.
