What careers involve hydrogen? Renewable jobs at TRS
TRS Staffing Solutions (TRS) is a specialist in renewables recruitment.
In this article, we focus on how green hydrogen systems and similar technologies offer many new job opportunities.
Summary
- New job opportunities are arising in the generation of Green Hydrogen along with similar technologies such as Green Ammonia, CCS, Transport, and Storage. These industries make use of transferrable skills you’ve gained throughout your professional career.
- Hydrogen plays an important role in energy transition away from fossil fuels. It’s an effective energy carrier and if used wisely has little environmental impact.
- Many countries are scaling up the production of Green Hydrogen through the remainder of the decade, these include China, the UK, the US, Canada, the EU, and Australia
Hydrogen jobs in demand
As we transition to cleaner energy sources, reskilling the existing workforce and upskilling new talent will be essential.
Within TRS, we see re-occurring roles developing within Hydrogen-related projects. Some examples include:
- Process Engineer
- Electrical Engineer
- Mechanical Engineer
- Project (Engineering) Manager
- Contracts Manager
- Document Controller
What is hydrogen energy and how does it work?
Hydrogen is a clean alternative to methane and the most common chemical element in our universe.
It is an effective energy carrier, meaning it can store energy. Similarly, hydrogen can also be burned or converted into e-fuels, which are synthetic fuels produced without fossil sources that can serve as a low-emissions alternative for traditional fuels such as methanol or kerosene.
If produced and consumed wisely, they can have very little environmental impact, meaning it has potential as a driver towards green energy.
Local production does not meet the growing demand for hydrogen yet, but there are efforts underway to scale up hydrogen production, this naturally means jobs in this sector are increasingly in demand.
To meet climate goals, there needs to be a shift towards new energy and green hydrogen systems can play a big role in that.
What country produces the most green hydrogen?
We’ve expanded on several countries that are leading the way in green hydrogen production.
For more information on renewable initiatives worldwide, make sure to read our article on countries paving the way in renewable energy.
1. China
China is the world's largest consumer and producer of hydrogen. China has set up more than 100 large-scale green hydrogen projects in the last three years.
2. United Kingdom
The UK has committed up to £4 billion in technology and production facilities by 2030 to cultivate a hydrogen economy.
3. Canada
The Canadian government has launched a CAD $1.5 billion Clean Fuels Fund to produce low-carbon fuels including hydrogen.
4. Australia, the United States, and Spain
According to data from Rystad Energy, these three countries are expected to be the top producers of green hydrogen by 2030, boosted by subsidies and large-scale projects.
5. European Union
The EU has adopted rules to define renewable hydrogen, approved funding for hydrogen projects, and plans to launch auctions for the European Hydrogen Bank in 2023. Countries like Spain, Denmark, and the Netherlands are emerging as hydrogen hubs within the EU.
Green hydrogen is growing. Companies across various sectors are actively recruiting, and many of the in-demand skills are transferable from adjacent industries.
As the hydrogen economy expands, job opportunities will multiply. Especially if we take the development of adjacent technologies and industries into consideration.
