Senior Geoenvironmental Engineer – Tailings Management
📍 Calgary, AB (Hybrid)
Overview
A leading engineering and environmental consulting firm is seeking a Senior Geoenvironmental Engineer with strong expertise in tailings management to join its Calgary-based team.
This role offers the opportunity to work on large-scale, complex projects supporting clients in the oil sands and mining sectors, with a focus on tailings management field programs, engineering analysis, and design.
Key Responsibilities
Project Leadership & Management
- Lead multidisciplinary project teams and manage scope, schedule, and budgets
- Ensure quality, safety, and performance standards are achieved
- Mentor and support the development of junior staff
Technical Expertise
- Provide technical leadership on complex geoenvironmental projects
- Lead tailings management field investigations and studies
- Conduct engineering assessments related to tailings, mine waste, and water management
- Support all project stages: conceptual, feasibility, FEED, and detailed design
- Develop compliant, defensible engineering analyses aligned with regulatory standards
Client & Business Development
- Maintain strong client relationships and serve as a key technical advisor
- Support proposal development, cost estimates, and project planning
- Identify new business opportunities and contribute to growth initiatives
- Participate in industry events, professional organizations, and networking
Problem Solving & Delivery
- Analyze complex site conditions and large datasets
- Develop innovative, practical, and compliant engineering solutions
- Anticipate and mitigate technical, regulatory, and operational risks
Communication & Collaboration
- Prepare high-quality technical reports and deliverables
- Present complex technical information clearly to diverse audiences
- Collaborate across disciplines to meet client and project objectives
About the Role
- Work Arrangement: Hybrid (Calgary-based office + remote flexibility)
- Travel: Approximately up to 10%, depending on project needs
- Work Environment: Fieldwork may involve industrial sites, challenging terrain, and regulated environments
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mining, Geological, Geotechnical, Environmental, Civil Engineering, or related field
- 10+ years of relevant experience
- P.Eng. (Alberta) or eligibility within one year
- Strong proficiency with MS Office tools and general engineering software
- Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record
- Legally authorized to work in Canada without sponsorship
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in geoenvironmental, mining, or related discipline
- Experience with tailings geotechnics, fine tailings, or flow behavior
- Knowledge of oil sands tailings and mine waste management
- Background in mining or mineral processing operations
- Demonstrated leadership, project management, and client-facing experience
- Consulting background and/or involvement in business development
